You eat well.
You try to avoid triggers.
And somehow… you still feel worse.
More bloated. More reactive. More anxious, tired, or just “off” — without a clear reason.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it.
And more importantly — your body isn’t “failing” you.
What is Histamine and Mast Cell Activation?
Histamine is a chemical your body produces as part of both the immune and nervous systems. It plays an important role in:
- digestion (stimulating stomach acid)
- sleep and wake cycles
- mood and brain signalling
- inflammation and immune responses
Mast cells are specialised immune cells that store and release histamine when needed.
For some people, these mast cells become more sensitive or overactive — often referred to as histamine intolerance or mast cell activation.
This can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including:
- bloating and digestive discomfort
- headaches
- fatigue
- anxiety or feeling “on edge”
- skin reactions
What makes this challenging is that these symptoms often don’t follow a clear pattern.
And this is where many people get stuck.
Because one of the most important things to understand is this:
👉 Histamine issues are not just about food.
The Histamine Bucket Theory
A helpful way to understand this is through the histamine bucket.
Imagine your body as a bucket.
Throughout the day, different things add to your overall histamine load:
- certain foods
- stress
- poor sleep
- overactivity or constant “doing”
- environmental exposures
When the bucket fills up and overflows, symptoms appear.
This is why it can feel so inconsistent.
You might tolerate a food one day…
and react to it the next.
Not because the food suddenly changed —
but because your bucket was already close to full before you ate.

Why Your Body Feels More Sensitive Some Days
Some days your bucket is already close to full before you even start your day.
A poor night’s sleep, ongoing stress, emotional load, or a busy, overstimulating week can all lower your body’s resilience.
This means your system has less capacity to process additional triggers.
So even foods that are usually well tolerated may suddenly feel like “too much.”
This is often the missing link for people who feel like their symptoms don’t make sense.
Why Diet Alone Often Isn’t Enough
Eating low-histamine diet can absolutely help lower the overall load.
But if your nervous system is constantly in a state of fight or flight, your body may remain more reactive.
When the system feels under pressure, it can:
- increase histamine release
- reduce digestive efficiency
- lower tolerance to foods and environmental triggers
Over time, this creates a cycle where the body becomes more sensitive, not less.
This is why focusing on food alone often leads to frustration.
My Personal Experience
I recently experienced this myself.
Even while eating well and being mindful of triggers, I was doing too much. My sleep wasn’t great, and my system felt overloaded.
At first, I questioned the food.
But when I stepped back, it became clear:
👉 it wasn’t just what I was eating —
it was everything my body was carrying.
This is something I consistently see with the women I support.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Instead of asking:
“What am I eating wrong?”
Try asking:
👉 What is adding to my histamine load right now?
This shift brings you out of restriction and into awareness.
It allows you to support your body more effectively — without feeling like you have to control everything.
It moves you from
- restriction → understanding
- frustration → clarity
How to Support Your Body
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s gently reducing the overall load on your system.
That might look like:
- simplifying meals and choosing lower histamine options
- creating small moments of rest throughout the day
- supporting your nervous system with simple practices
- improving sleep where possible
These elements work together to help your body feel safer and more balanced.
These pieces work together.
A Gentle Place to Start
If your body feels sensitive or overwhelmed, simplifying your meals can help take some pressure off.
